Analysis of Digital Literacy Education Status among the Elderly in the Metaverse Era

Abstract
Digital alienation among the elderly is accelerating in the era of re-emerging metaverse due to prolonged coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Therefore, this study aimed to identify a support plan for the incoming metaverse era by analyzing the trend and status of education to promote digital literacy among the elderly.
Digital-based infectious disease management and the spread of non-face-to-face services related to economic activities is transforming digital literacy from fragmentary information processing and withdrawal to daily literacy of safety, management, and communication. Investigation of domestic online articles from 2019 to July 2021 showed 61 out of 111 articles were about personal computer (PC)-based education informatization (55.0%), whereas 19 were about smartphone education (17.1%). In addition, as of August 2021, by analyzing the trend of digital education-related programs conducted at the senior welfare center of Gyeonggi Province, 170 cases (79.8%) out of 213 education programs related to basic digital information capacity and education using digital information for convenience in daily life showed insignificant result.
In the era of metaverse, which has been expanding throughout industries and public services since the COVID-19 pandemic, digital capacity building education focused on practical applications in daily life is necessary. A customized program for the elderly should be prepared to help them to develop the ability to handle digital devices and the knowledge of their appropriate use. In addition, changes in the perception of the elderly should be accompanied in the direction of actively responding to changes in the real world.
